7 Awesome Stats from NFL Week 5

Week 5 of the NFL season has nearly come and gone. Let's look back at 7 feats of statistical awesomeness.

1. The Kansas City Chiefs overcame a 24-7 deficit to defeat Indianapolis 28-24. It marked the seventh time this season that a team trailed by at least 17 points and came back to win the game. That is the most through the first five weeks of any season in NFL history.

2. With two games remaining in Week 5, two quarterbacks have thrown for at least 400 yards (New York Giants’ ELI MANNING, 420 and Houston’s MATT SCHAUB, 416) to bring the season total to 10. That total is the most ever through the first five weeks of a season and already ranks as the fourth-most for a single season (13 in 1986 and 2004; 11 in 2010).

3. New Orleans quarterback DREW BREES completed 32 of 45 passes (71.1 percent) for 359 yards and two touchdowns in the Saints’ 30-27 win at Carolina. Brees has a touchdown pass in 32 consecutive games – equivalent to two full regular seasons – and that is the third-longest streak in NFL history (Pro Football Hall of Famer JOHNNY UNITAS, 47 and BRETT FAVRE, 36). He also extended his NFL-record streak of consecutive games with at least 20 completions to 25 games in a row.

4. Minnesota running back ADRIAN PETERSON rushed for 122 yards and three touchdowns in the Vikings’ 34-10 win over Arizona.  Peterson had three rushing touchdowns in the first quarter and is just the fifth player since the 1970 merger to accomplish the feat. The other four were Pro Football Hall of Famer ERIC DICKERSON (10/31/88), JAMES STEWART (10/12/97), STEPHEN DAVIS (9/19/99) and TIM BIAKABUTUKA (10/3/99).

5. Philadelphia quarterback MICHAEL VICK rushed for 90 yards (4,948) against Buffalo and surpassed RANDALL CUNNINGHAM (4,928) for the most rushing yards by a quarterback in NFL history. Vick holds NFL quarterback rushing records for a single game (173), season (1,039) and career (4,948).

6. Carolina quarterback CAM NEWTON passed for two touchdowns and rushed for one against New Orleans.  This season, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2011 NFL Draft has seven passing touchdowns and five rushing TDs.  He is the first player in NFL history with at least five passing and five rushing touchdowns in the first five games of a career.

7. New England wide receiver WES WELKER had 124 receiving yards in the Patriots’ 30-21 win over the New York Jets. Welker has 740 receiving yards this season, the most ever through a team’s first five games of a season. The previous mark was 704 receiving yards by CHARLEY HENNIGAN of the Houston Oilers in 1961.
